Instagram post size
Post photos 1080 pixels wide. In the app, Instagram keeps any shape from 1.91:1 (1080 × 566) to 3:4 (1080 × 1440); ads and the API stop at 4:5 (1080 × 1350). A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos in one orientation.

Good to know
- A photo outside 1.91:1 to 3:4 is cropped to fit.
- Instagram's help pages don't state the shape of the profile grid's tiles, so it isn't in the table.
Questions
Is an Instagram portrait post 4:5 or 3:4?
It depends where it's posted from. The app keeps photos up to 3:4 (1080 × 1440). Ads and the API stop at 4:5 (1080 × 1350). A 4:5 post works everywhere.
What size should a carousel be?
Every photo and video in a carousel takes the same orientation, square, portrait or landscape. Make them all the same size, such as 1080 × 1350, so none is cropped differently.
