Midjourney alternatives in 2026, by what you need instead
Choose Ideogram for text inside images and Krea for Midjourney-like breadth with an official MCP server. Choose Kuro when an agent should make the images and clips and keep the same face or product across them. Choose Leonardo for the cheapest paid entry, and Magnific (formerly Freepik) for stock assets and a video editor in the same plan.
Why people look beyond Midjourney
Midjourney has no API and bans automation outright: its guidelines say accounts that automate may be blocked. No agent, script or app can use it on your behalf.
Work is public by default, and private Stealth mode starts on the $60 Pro plan. There's no free trial on the web or Discord. Video is image-to-video only, 5 seconds a clip (extendable to 21) at 480p or 720p, with no documented sound. There's also no saved character library: references are attached again on every prompt.

Ideogram
Best for: Posters, ads and anything with words in the picture
Ideogram's own models render text better than most, and Plus and above keep generating on Ideogram's own models in a slower queue after credits run out. Batch runs take up to 500 prompts from a spreadsheet. It's weaker past still images: video comes through partner models, there's no voice or music, and its first-party MCP server can search the docs but can't generate. It offers no refunds.

Krea
Best for: Many image and video models under one plan, with an agent that can drive them
Krea carries its own image models plus about fifty third-party ones, a node canvas, LoRA training and an in-app agent. Its official MCP server lets Claude Code, Codex and Cursor generate on your Krea plan. It's harder to predict: compute units differ by model and don't roll over, the API is a separate dollar balance, and the free tier can't make video.

Kuro
Best for: An agent that makes images and clips, and keeps the same subject across them
Kuro is built for agents. One hosted MCP server lets Claude, Codex or Cursor make images, clips, voice-overs and music, keep everything in a library, and assemble storyboard films. A person or product is saved once as a Subject from photos you already have and stays the same across images and video. It has no house model and none of Midjourney's style tools (style codes, moodboards, personalization), so if Midjourney's look is the point, it isn't a replacement.

Leonardo
Best for: The cheapest paid plan, with a rollover bank and trained styles
Leonardo starts at $12 a month, banks up to three months of unused tokens, and trains LoRA "Elements" on your own images. Its Blueprints package common jobs such as a consistent character or a storyboard sheet. Its unlimited mode leaves out every premium third-party model, no per-model price list is published, and its MCP server has one image tool behind a separate API balance. Free generations are public.

Magnific
Best for: One subscription that also covers stock photos, mockups and a video editor
Magnific, Freepik's AI suite renamed in April 2026, pairs a wide model catalog with a 250-million-asset stock library, a node canvas and a timeline editor. Its hosted MCP server works from Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. Unlimited use on Premium+ applies only in the web app and is shrinking at renewal, and extra credits are forfeited when you cancel.

When to stay with Midjourney
Midjourney's look and its style tools (style references and codes, moodboards, personalization profiles) are still why people pay for it. On Standard and above, Relax mode makes images effectively unlimited. If you make images by hand, value that aesthetic, and either don't mind your work being public or pay for Pro, staying is reasonable. None of the picks above reproduces it.
How this list was made
Each product was researched from its own pricing, documentation and terms pages, and each claim links to the page it came from. Nothing on this list was tested in a paid account. Where an MCP server is mentioned, we checked without signing in that its endpoint answers. The 2026 roundups most often add ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly and Google Gemini to this list. They're good general-purpose picks, but this page compares tools you'd move a Midjourney workflow to.
