Convert HEIC to JPG

HEIC is the format iPhones save photos in. Drop one here and get a JPG that opens everywhere, at the photo's full size.

Your file never leaves this device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Drop a HEIC, WebP, PNG, JPG, GIF or AVIF picture.
  2. Pick JPG, PNG or WebP, and the quality for JPG or WebP.
  3. Press Convert and download the picture.

Questions

What is a HEIC file?

A photo saved in HEIF, the format iPhones and iPads use by default since iOS 11. The picture inside is compressed with HEVC (H.265), which makes it up to half the size of a JPG of the same quality, but Windows, Android and many websites don't open it without help.

Can I stop my iPhone saving HEIC?

Yes: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible saves new photos as JPG. Photos you send by AirDrop or attach in Mail are often converted to JPG on the way out anyway.

Which format should I pick?

JPG for photos you send or post: small, and opened by everything. PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with transparency: it keeps every pixel. WebP is smaller than both for the same look, and every current browser opens it, but some older apps don't.

Does the picture lose quality?

PNG keeps every pixel of what the browser read. JPG and WebP compress; at the default quality of 90 the difference is hard to see. Converting a JPG to PNG can't bring back what the JPG already lost.

What happens to the photo's metadata?

The new file has none: no camera details, no date, no location. The picture is turned the right way up first.

Does my picture get uploaded?

No. It's read and written by this page, in your browser. HEIC photos are read with libheif, which this page loads when you drop one.
