Crop a video to a square
The box is locked to 1:1 and starts as the biggest square in the middle of the picture. Slide it to what matters, or make it smaller to crop in closer.
Your file never leaves this device. Everything runs in your browser.
How it works
- Drop your video.
- Drag the box over what you want to keep, or pick a shape.
- Press Crop and download the MP4.
Questions
How much of my video does a square keep?
From a landscape 1920 × 1080 video, the biggest square is 1080 × 1080: the full height and 56% of the width. From a vertical 1080 × 1920 video it's 1080 × 1080 too, the full width and 56% of the height. The rest is cut away, so slide the box to keep what matters.
Can I keep the whole picture in a square?
Yes, with Resize a video: pick 1:1 and Fit. That puts the whole video on a square with a blurred, black or white background instead of cutting it.
How is this different from Resize?
Resize makes a video the shape a platform asks for: it crops along one direction only and brings the result down to that platform's size, 1080 × 1920 for 9:16. Crop keeps any box you draw, anywhere in the picture and at any size, at the source's own pixels. Use it to cut away black bars, a busy edge or everything but one subject.
Does cropping lose quality?
What you keep isn't scaled, but the picture is re-encoded to H.264 at high quality, because a crop changes every frame. The sound is copied when it's already AAC and re-encoded to AAC otherwise.
What size is the result?
The box's size, to the pixel, with each side rounded to an even number because H.264 needs that. The preview shows it as you drag, with how much of the picture you keep.
Is there a length limit?
Files up to 2 GB and videos up to 15 minutes, because the picture is re-encoded.
Does my video get uploaded?
No. It's cropped in your browser, on your device.
Which browsers does it work in?
Current Chrome, Edge and Safari. Cropping makes an MP4, which needs a browser that can encode H.264; if yours can't, the tool says so before it starts.
