Questions
How much of a landscape video does 9:16 keep?
From 1920 × 1080, the 9:16 box is 608 × 1080: the full height and 32% of the width. From 4K, 3840 × 2160, it's 1216 × 2160, more than the 1080 × 1920 TikTok, Reels and Shorts ask for.
Why is my 9:16 crop smaller than 1080 × 1920?
A crop keeps the source's own pixels, and a 1080p frame is only 1080 tall. A phone scales it up to fill the screen. To keep the whole landscape picture instead, use Resize a video with Fit, which puts it on a 9:16 background.
How is this different from Resize?
Resize makes a video the shape a platform asks for: it crops along one direction only and brings the result down to that platform's size, 1080 × 1920 for 9:16. Crop keeps any box you draw, anywhere in the picture and at any size, at the source's own pixels. Use it to cut away black bars, a busy edge or everything but one subject.
Does cropping lose quality?
What you keep isn't scaled, but the picture is re-encoded to H.264 at high quality, because a crop changes every frame. The sound is copied when it's already AAC and re-encoded to AAC otherwise.
What size is the result?
The box's size, to the pixel, with each side rounded to an even number because H.264 needs that. The preview shows it as you drag, with how much of the picture you keep.
Is there a length limit?
Files up to 2 GB and videos up to 15 minutes, because the picture is re-encoded.
Does my video get uploaded?
No. It's cropped in your browser, on your device.
Which browsers does it work in?
Current Chrome, Edge and Safari. Cropping makes an MP4, which needs a browser that can encode H.264; if yours can't, the tool says so before it starts.
