Remove audio from an MP4

An MP4 holds its picture and its sound as separate tracks. This keeps the video track exactly as it is, leaves the audio track out, and gives you back an MP4.

Your file never leaves this device. Everything runs in your browser.

How it works

  1. Drop your video.
  2. Check it's the right one, then press Mute.
  3. Download the silent video, in the same format as the original.

Questions

Will the MP4 still play everywhere?

Yes, if the original did. The video track is the same one, so H.264 stays H.264, and the file is written with its index at the front, which Instagram requires and every upload prefers.

How much smaller will it be?

Smaller by the size of the sound track. AAC sound at 128 kbps, a common rate, takes about 1 MB per minute. The tool shows the saving when it's done.

Does muting lose quality?

No. The video is copied packet by packet, exactly as it was, and only the sound is left out. Nothing is re-encoded.

What format do I get?

The one you dropped: an MP4 stays an MP4, a MOV stays a MOV, a WebM stays a WebM and an MKV stays an MKV.

Is there a length limit?

Files up to 2 GB, and no limit on length, because nothing is re-encoded.

Does my video get uploaded?

No. The sound is removed in your browser, on your device.

Which browsers does it work in?

Current Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. Nothing is re-encoded, so it works even in a browser that can't make MP4 video.
