# Resize an image

## How it works

1. Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC picture.
2. Type a width or a height, or pick 25%, 50% or 75%. With Keep the shape on, the other side follows.
3. Pick the format and quality, press Resize and download the picture.

## Questions

### Does resizing lower the quality?

Making a picture smaller keeps it sharp: it's reduced in halving steps, then drawn at the exact size. Making it larger can't add detail that isn't there, so it looks softer. JPG and WebP also have a quality setting, 90 by default.

### What happens to the photo's metadata?

The new file has none: no camera details, no date, no location. The picture is turned the right way up first, so losing the rotation flag changes nothing you see.

### How large can the picture be?

Up to 8,192 pixels a side and about 16.7 megapixels, which is as large as Safari will draw. A larger size is refused, with the largest the picture can be at its shape.

### Does my picture get uploaded?

No. It's read and redrawn by this page, in your browser.
