# Seedream 5 Lite

ByteDance · Images · standard

The default image model: cheap, fast, takes seven references, and gives away its top resolution.

## What it costs

- Size · 2K: 3 credits (≈ $0.07)
- Size · 3K: 3 credits (≈ $0.07)

Dollar figures are approximate, at the Starter plan's rate of $19.00 for 800 credits.

## What it takes

- **Aspect ratios**: 1:1 4:3 3:4 16:9 9:16 3:2 2:3 21:9
- **Reference images**: 7

## When to reach for it

If you have no opinion about which image model to use, this is the one to start with. Three credits, seven reference images, and eight aspect ratios including the 21:9 that most of the catalog does not offer. It handles the ordinary run of work, from product shots and characters to scenes and style studies, without needing much persuasion.

The one thing worth knowing is that its size setting charges the same for 3K as it does for 2K. There is no reason to run it at 2K. Set it to 3K and take the resolution for nothing, which is a quirk of how the provider meters this model rather than anything we chose.

Where it gives way is instruction-following on complicated compositions: several objects in stated spatial relationships, or text that has to read as specific words. That is what GPT Image 2 is better at, and it costs roughly four times as much. Move up when a prompt has failed here twice for the same reason, not as a general precaution. Most prompts that fail on this model fail on the premium ones too, because the problem is the prompt or a missing reference.

## How to prompt Seedream 5

Describe what you want in your own words and Kuro writes the prompt for you. If you would rather write it yourself, this is what Seedream 5 responds to.

Describe the frame as an inventory of what is in it, in depth order: the ground, then what stands in the middle, then the subject at the near edge, then what is behind. Seedream places a list of things more reliably than it interprets camera language.

Name a set by its materials — the concrete floor, the plaster wall, the tin roof — rather than calling it a kitchen or an office. A named room arrives with its furniture, and then you are arguing with a background you invited. Concrete nouns beat adjectives generally: "brushed steel espresso machine on white marble" gives the model something to draw, "beautiful modern machine" does not.

Anything the picture depends on — who is looking where, what must read at a glance — belongs in the prompt as a plain fact about the image, not left for the model to infer from the situation.

When you attach a reference, say what it is for and what it is not for: "keep the character design exactly as in the reference — same crest, same beak, same proportions — but full body, small in frame, standing". Put the most important reference first; the seats are limited and the last references are the first to go.

Keep it short. Past roughly eighty words Seedream starts averaging ideas instead of placing each one, so let references carry the detail the words cannot. And when a prompt fails, a premium model rarely rescues it: almost every prompt that fails here fails on the dearer models too, because the fault is the wording or a missing reference.

A still that will become a clip's first frame is the film's opening shot, not a portrait. Compose it at the shot size the film opens on, with everyone who acts visible at the height and distance the action needs. Where text would appear but should not, make it unreadable rather than banning it — "too small and too far out of focus to read" — and end with "no readable text anywhere, no signage, no logos, no watermark".

The same advice covers [Seedream 5 Pro](https://meetkuro.com/models/seedream-5-pro.md). Their pages note what differs.

### What it can't do

- Up to seven reference images, and a saved Subject's picture takes one of those seats.
- Eight aspect ratios: 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 16:9, 9:16, 3:2, 2:3 and 21:9. No 4:5, no 5:4, and no strip formats.
- Dense or small lettering that must be read is a weak spot. Avoid briefs that depend on legible signs and labels.
- Rewording a prompt to fix one detail re-rolls the whole picture — a new subject, a new background, a good frame thrown away. Edit the finished picture with only the change instead.
- Running the same prompt again returns a cousin, not a twin. Once a frame is right, the file is the authority, not the prompt.
- Pro screens every request for sexual content once the prompt and references are put together; a blocked brief needs rewriting, not resending. Pro has also failed at the provider on some pairs of references that Lite took without trouble — if a multi-reference Pro run fails, try it on Lite.

### Use something else when…

- The picture has lettering that must be read, dense small type, or many objects in stated positions: [GPT Image 2.5 Flare](https://meetkuro.com/models/gpt-image-2.5-flare.md).
- The canvas is 4:5, 5:4 or a strip such as 1:4 or 8:1: [Nano Banana 2.1](https://meetkuro.com/models/nano-banana-2.1.md).
- A face, a product or an earlier frame has to be matched closely from references: [Nano Banana 2.1](https://meetkuro.com/models/nano-banana-2.1.md).
- You need a vector file: [Recraft V4.1 SVG](https://meetkuro.com/models/recraft-v4.1-svg.md).
- You want a big batch of rough layouts with no references: [P-Image](https://meetkuro.com/models/p-image.md).

## Compared with

- [Seedream 5 Lite vs Nano Banana 2](https://meetkuro.com/compare/seedream-5-lite-vs-nano-banana-2.md): Take Seedream 5 Lite unless the deliverable has an unusual shape. Then it has to be Nano Banana 2.

## Guides that cover it

- [Two pictures, fifteen seconds: the first-and-last-frame method](https://meetkuro.com/guides/first-and-last-frame.md): Make the opening frame and the closing frame yourself, hand a video model both, and let it fill the middle. Most models take a last frame. What it buys.
- [Which image model to reach for, and when](https://meetkuro.com/guides/choosing-an-image-model.md): Twelve image models, from half a credit to twenty-one. What each one is for, where the resolution setting changes the price, and when the cheap tier is right.

## Seedream 5 Lite is one pick in the composer.

Every model in this catalog runs from the same prompt bar, priced in the same credits.
