# Sora alternatives in 2026, after OpenAI shut it down

Choose Google Flow for the closest replacement: Veo 3.1 clips with dialogue, and characters that keep both face and voice. Choose Kling AI for the cheapest native-audio video, Higgsfield for many video models behind creator presets, Kuro when an agent should make the film with the same person in every scene, and Runway for a video company's own API and MCP server.

## Why people look beyond Sora

OpenAI closed Sora in two stages: the app and the web experience on 26 April 2026, and the API on 24 September 2026. It has said that if it offers a final export window it will email users first, and that Sora data is permanently deleted once the deadlines pass. The Decoder reported the reason as compute moved to coding tools and enterprise customers.

What most people are replacing is Sora 2, launched on 30 September 2025: video with synchronized audio, and an app with a feed for sharing clips and cameos that put your own likeness into generated scenes. No product below copies all of that, so the useful question is which part you used. For developers who called the API, the replacements are Veo through Google's Gemini API, Runway's API, or Kling's from a $700 package.

## Each one, in a paragraph

### Google Flow

Best for: The closest replacement: Veo clips with dialogue, and characters that keep face and voice

Flow gives every subscriber 50 free credits a day on top of the plan's monthly credits. It runs Veo 3.1 with audio, has characters that keep both face and voice, and a Scenebuilder to sequence clips. Veo clips come in 4, 6 or 8 seconds, and the Quality model costs 100 credits per 8-second clip, which is ten a month on AI Pro. 4K is Ultra-only and credits don't roll over. There's no MCP: agents go through the Gemini API instead.

### Kling AI

Best for: The cheapest native-audio video, with long single takes

Kling 3.0 costs 30 credits for 5 seconds at 720p, about $0.40 at Standard's renewal price. It makes up to 15 seconds in one take with sound and multi-shot, and Kling 4.0 goes to 30 seconds. A saved Element Library keeps subjects consistent. Prices move, though: first months are discounted and the tiers changed within three months. The free tier is non-commercial, the API starts at a $700 package, and there's no official MCP server.

### Higgsfield

Best for: Many video models behind creator presets, ad templates and characters

Higgsfield puts most flagship video models behind one plan, with Marketing Studio's ad templates, Soul characters and Cinema Studio for clips up to 30 seconds. Its MCP server works from Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. Its prices are harder to pin down: the flagship isn't on its price table and its pages contradict each other. Subscription credits expire every cycle, unlimited use never applies through agents, and inputs and outputs may be used for training outside business plans.

### Kuro

Best for: Films an agent makes, with the same person in every scene

Kuro runs Veo 3.1 with sound (267 credits for an 8-second clip, $6.34 at Starter's rate) beside Kling 3.0, Wan and Seedance 2.5, which makes single takes of up to 30 seconds. A person is saved as a Subject from a few photos, with no training, and kept in every scene of a storyboard film that stays editable scene by scene. An agent can do all of it over the hosted MCP server, and a request your own fal or Replicate key can run costs no Kuro credits. It has no social feed, no remixing of other people's clips, and no way to record a cameo of yourself in an app.

### Runway

Best for: A video company's own models, API and MCP server

Runway pairs Gen-4.5 and Aleph video editing with a wide third-party catalog, a multi-track timeline and a hosted MCP server that works from Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. Its API runs on a separate balance from the app. Its Unlimited plan is retired, Standard and Pro credits expire monthly, video is generated at 720p, and its terms let it train on your inputs and outputs.

## The models behind these picks

- [Veo 3.1](https://meetkuro.com/models/veo-3.1.md): Google's flagship: generates dialogue and sound from the same prompt as the picture.
- [Kling v3](https://meetkuro.com/models/kling-v3-video.md): Kling 3.0 without the reference channels: a prompt, a first and last frame, and 4K.
- [Kling 3.0 vs Veo 3.1](https://meetkuro.com/compare/kling-v3-video-vs-veo-3.1.md): Veo 3.1 when someone speaks a scripted line, or a reference picture has to hold. Kling 3.0 when the take runs past eight seconds, is square, or should be 4K.

## If you still have Sora videos

There is nothing left to stay on: the app closed in April and the API in September. If you still want your Sora videos, watch the email address on your OpenAI account, because OpenAI has said it will write before any final export window, and that the data is permanently deleted once the deadlines pass. A clip you want to remake elsewhere starts again from its prompt.

## How this list was made

Each product was researched from its own pricing, help center, documentation and terms pages for the other alternatives lists on this site, checked on 16 October 2026, and each claim links to the page it came from. Sora's dates come from OpenAI's help article and The Decoder's report of it, and Sora 2's features from Decrypt's launch-day report, all checked on 19 October 2026. Nothing on this list was tested in a paid account. Other roundups also name Luma, Pika and LTX Studio. Luma is on our Runway list, and we left the other two out because we had not researched them to the same standard.

Prepared by Quentin Cot. Facts checked on October 16, 2026. Next check due by December 1, 2026.
